How to Protect Your Employees: A Guide to the Workplace Violence Safety Act

Wednesday, March 26, 2014
12:15 p.m. — 1:15 p.m.

As part of the LA Law Library's MCLE lunch hour speaker series, this class will discuss the issue of workplace violence, a topic that employers and employees must grapple with on an all-too-regular basis. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that in 2009 alone, approximately 572,000 nonfatal violent crimes occurred against persons while they were at work or on duty, and 521 people were killed in the workplace. This presentation will provide a step-by-step guide to at least one tool – the Workplace Violence Safety Act – that employers and their counsel can utilize on behalf of their employees when the employees are faced with a threatening situation.

Topic includes:

  • The forms that need to be filled out to secure a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction
  • Gathering evidence and working with law enforcement
  • Whether an employer has a legal duty to file a legal action
  • Other legal options available to employers and counsel

Fees: $20 for the class (nonrefundable, payment reserves spot)

1.0 hours general MCLE credit

Presenter David King, an attorney with the law firm of Jenkins & Hogin, has extensive experience seeking this judicial relief on behalf of his clients and is prepared to answer any questions that you may have on the process. Mr. King is a frequent speaker for local public agencies business groups.
