ON DEMAND: MCLE: Managing Stress in Uncertain Times

During this entertaining and valuable class, you will learn a collection of science-based techniques for enhancing your mental strength and peak performance while under stress. Each technique arises from cutting-edge findings of neuroscience and will help you reduce your brain's “amygdala hijack” during those high-stress moments, and will help you activate your prefrontal cortex and higher brain regions. Importantly, each technique has been scientifically-proven to take only two minutes or less! There will also be short experiential exercises (with no pressure to participate) that will catalyze laughter and learning. So be prepared to have fun and to walk away with a collection of tangible tools that you can apply the very next day in order to build a stronger mind, grow your resiliency, and perform even better in your legal career!

Professor Rebecca Simon Green was a law professor who now helps legal professionals experience less stress and overall success. Rebecca has degrees from UC Berkeley and Southwestern Law School. She is the co-creator of the nationally-recognized “Mindfulness, Stress Management, and Peak Performance Program.” She currently teaches at UCI Law and has a forthcoming book, co-authored with her partner Jarrett Green, Happiness and Peak Performance in the Law.

ON DEMAND: MCLE: Validating and Updating Research as an Ethical Obligation

Citators do not always come to mind when attorneys think of their ethical obligations to the court. However, presenting good law and conducting thorough research are the cornerstones of ethical lawyering. In this class, attorneys will learn how to use legal citators to validate and expand their research.

Class covers:

  • How to use Westlaw’s KeyCite
  • How to use Lexis’ Shepard’s
  • How using citators can help attorneys fulfill their duty of competency to their clients
  • How using citators can help attorneys fulfill their duty of candor to the court

John Miller is the Legal Education Librarian at LA Law Library. John attended UC Davis for his BA and JD. After graduating, John helped launch the UCD’s Tribal Justice Project. He then attended the University of Washington for his MLIS. John joins LA Law Library after serving as UC Hastings’ student services librarian. John also teaches as an adjunct lecturer of law at USC Gould School of Law and works with Native American tribes to promote access to justice.

Probate is the legal process of distributing a person’s cash, property, and other assets after they die. For relatives and heirs, probate court can be complicated and intimidating, especially when disputes arise. In this class, learn the basics of probate and the administration of estates and trusts, including when probate can be avoided, how to challenge improper use or waste of estate property, and where to go for further information and assistance. Learning important legal fundamentals about probate can make your legal journey easier and more successful.

  • What is probate, and how it works
  • When probate is necessary, and when it can be avoided
  • Appointment of administrators, and how to challenge an appointment
  • What to do about improper use or transfer of estate property
  • When probate court can get involved in trust administration
  • Will challenges and what to do about possible financial elder abuse
  • Resources for further information and where to seek help

Class approved for Court Interpreter Minimum Continuing Education (CIMCE) credit.
