How to Become a Minor’s Legal Guardian

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018   10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Unfortunately, many caregivers do not know how to obtain the legal guardianship necessary to adequately provide for children in their care so they can make decisions about their education, medical needs and living arrangements. Do you need help establishing a legal guardianship so that you can ensure that the basic needs of a child in your care are met? At this clinic, low income, unrepresented persons seeking to establish probate guardianships for minors whose parents can't or won't care for them will be assisted by pro bono attorneys in completing the necessary court forms.

Same day, in person registration required. Registration begins at 9:30a.m. in Room 230 of the Los Angeles Superior Court, 111 North Hill Street. No telephone or online registration available.

It is not necessary to bring children to the clinic.

Once registered, eligible caregivers will be assigned to a volunteer attorney to meet with them and help them fill out the necessary, on-line court forms to be appointed as guardians over the youth.

Access to Police Personnel Files (Pitchess Motions)

Tuesday Oct. 23 2018  12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

In criminal and civil cases where police officers are involved, often one of the parties would like to gain access to a police officer's personnel file. The procedure for making the request is a Pitchess motion. This allows a criminal defendant or civil litigant to request disclosure of arresting or investigating officer or detective's personnel file in order to discover evidence regarding credibility, prejudice or prior use of excessive force.

Civil Lawsuit Basics: How to File and Respond to a Complaint

Thursday, October 24, 2019:  12:15 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.

A civil lawsuit starts with the filing and service of a written complaint. The complaint serves many purposes, including the identification of the parties involved in the lawsuit, the plaintiff's reason for filing a lawsuit, and the type of relief that is sought. The defendant must then respond to the complaint by filing an answer or another type of response. The complaint and the defendant's responses are called pleadings, and they set the stage for all that comes afterward in the lawsuit. In this class, learn how to prepare, file, serve and respond to civil case pleadings in California state courts.

Class covers:

  • Is filing a lawsuit a good idea?
  • Identifying possible legal theories
  • Drafting the complaint
  • Service of summons and complaint
  • Answers and other responsive pleadings

Class approved for Court Interpreter Minimum Continuing Education (CIMCE) credit.
