Medical/Legal/Community Partnership lawyers will discuss ethical considerations in partnerships involving virtual to on-site clinic-based partnerships. Issues discussed will include client confidentiality, managing expectations of partners to ensure loyalty to the client, advocacy for the client's stated interest, and maintenance of attorney/client privilege, while meeting partner demands and project deliverables. The ethical challenges raised by growing and expanding innovative MLP strategies will be discussed.

Medical/Legal/Community Partnerships involve attorneys in complicated working relationships with community health workers who refer cases, clinical supervisory staff who guide health workers and clients who need representation for difficult legal issues. The partnership models vary from virtual systems to on-site clinic-based partnerships. Each of these settings gives rise to different and challenging ethical considerations that will be explored by panelists who have worked in different partnership settings.

Criminal defense lawyers can no longer avoid learning basic immigration law. Both federal and state courts have held that criminal defense practitioners must know the basics of immigration law and how criminal convictions affect their non-citizen clients in order to competently fulfill their Sixth Amendment duties to their clients. In this class, learn the basics of discerning what negative immigration consequences can stem from criminal convictions (including guilty pleas) suffered by non-citizens, and how to attempt to mitigate them where possible.

Class covers:

• Counsel's duties under California and Federal law regarding non-citizen clients
• Information needed from non-citizen clients in the initial client interview
• Deportable Offenses and Inadmissible Offenses: What these terms mean for your clients
• Negotiating immigration-neutral dispositions
• The importance of filing documentation for possible post-conviction review, and how to do it

Presented by Albert Camacho:
Albert Camacho Jr. has been an attorney with the Los Angeles County Office of the Public Defender for 24 years and has litigated misdemeanor and felony cases in both juvenile and adult courts. Since 2010, he has primarily been assigned to the Appellate Branch and has argued before both the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and the California Court of Appeal. He has presented to both the Public Defender's and the Alternate Public Defender's Offices of Los Angeles County on numerous issues including felony sentencing, immigration consequences of criminal convictions, and motion practice. Mr. Camacho is a graduate of the USC Gould School of Law. He is also a graduate of California State University, Northridge, with a B.S. in Mathematics.

Ryan Metheny is Managing Librarian, Legal Education at LA Law Library. After graduating from UCLA School of Law, Ryan practiced First Amendment law at a public interest firm in Berkeley, CA. He transitioned to librarianship to focus on his passions of research and education, and earned a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Washington. Ryan also teaches Legal Research as an adjunct faculty member at USC Gould School of Law.
