MCLE: Attorneys' Ethical Duties Towards Clients When Using Technology

In general, lawyers are bound by important ethical obligations when using technology. This seminar will provide an essential overview of an attorney's duties of confidentiality and competence in our ever-changing technological world. Learn about timely topics like transmitting and storing confidential client information, and precautions that should be taken when using technology susceptible to unauthorized access (i.e., hacking).

Class covers:

  • How different technologies work, and the risks involved
  • How the duties of confidentiality and competence apply to use of technology
  • How to ethically use technologies like the cloud, digital currencies, encryption, or a wireless connection
  • Latest relevant ethics opinions

Salar Atrizadeh, Esq., has an extensive background in technology and holds a B.S. in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Database Management Systems. He regularly conducts seminars on topics at the intersection of law and technology before legal and non-legal organizations, including, the State Bar of California, State Bar of New Mexico, American Law Institute, NextSpace, Rotary International, Thomson Reuters, Institute of Internal Auditors, and various chambers of commerce.

The practice of law is stressful. Stress can adversely affect your physical, mental and emotional health, and can even affect work performance and competence. This class will explore the adverse psychological and physiological effects of stress and give you the tools to manage stress when it arises in your legal practice.

Class covers:

  • What stress is, and how to recognize the signs
  • Attorneys and stress: the extent of the problem
  • Common stressors for attorneys, and how to manage your body’s stress response
  • Helpful resources, tips and strategies for handling stress

Presented by Wean Khing Wong:

Wean Khing Wong is a patent attorney specializing in medical, biological, chemical, and material sciences. She serves as an appellate court mediator in intellectual property and real estate matters and is a designated Master Certified Negotiation Expert. She holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology and a B.S. in Biology, she is a life coach and has served as a trainer for psychotherapy interns at Airport Marina Counseling Service and Maple Counseling Center. When teaching seminars on stress management, she draws both from her biological and psychological expertise, and from her personal experiences with stress management.

Trial is the culmination of a civil lawsuit, where evidence is presented and a decision made by the court. In this class, an experienced trial judge will provide basic rules, strategy and practice tips about how to present evidence in California state court.

  • Presenting testimony from friendly witnesses
  • Cross-examining unfriendly witnesses
  • Getting documents admitted into evidence
  • How to stop improper evidence by making effective objections
  • Making opening and closing arguments
