Katie O’Laughlin is a Reference & Research Librarian. In addition to earning her Masters of Science in Library Science from USC, Katie is a graduate of Loyola Law School. She began her career as a reference librarian and legal research instructor at Southwestern University School of Law and then practiced law for many years before opening an independent bookstore in the Los Angeles area. Returning to her roots in law librarianship at LA Law Library, Katie now provides reference services, is involved with the Members Program, the law school internship program, and teaches several classes.

California Rule of Professional Conduct 1-400, which regulates attorney advertising and solicitation, was last amended in 1997. At that time, law firm websites were rare and the founders of Facebook were in middle school. This information-packed program will show you how to comply with the advertising rules in the Internet age.

Class Covers:

• What are the most important ethical rules that govern advertising and solicitation by California lawyers?
• What are the most common ethical pitfalls that lawyers need to avoid if they use social networking tools such as LinkedIn, Avvo, or Yelp?
• How does one comply with the ethical rules relating to the use of testimonials and endorsements?

Presented by Gideon Grunfeld
Gideon Grunfeld is a cum laude graduate of UC Hastings School of Law. After completing a federal clerkship here in the Central District, he worked as a big-firm business litigator for almost ten years. In 2004, Gideon founded Rainmaking For Lawyers, which helps lawyers and law firms work more productively and profitably. He is one of the co-authors of the treatise, “A California Guide to Opening and Managing a Law Office,” which was published by the State Bar of California.
