This class introduces legal researchers to cases, statutes, and regulations, and the roles they play in your research. Learn fundamental legal research concepts by focusing on the elements and features of legal research materials and the tools by which to locate them.

MCLE: We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights

As featured in the New York Times and elsewhere, UCLA School of Law Professor Adam Winkler’s critically acclaimed new book We the Corporations chronicles the astonishing story of one of the most successful yet least well-known “civil rights movements” in American history. Uncovering the roots of Citizens United, Prof. Winkler shows how that controversial Supreme Court decision was the capstone of a two-hundred-year struggle over corporate personhood and constitutional protections for business.

Class covers:

·        The legal history of “corporate personhood” in the United States

·        The extensive constitutional rights of corporations under current law

·        The untold story of how the stage was set for the controversial decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission giving corporations expansive free speech rights

Presented byProf. Adam WinklerProfessor Adam Winkler is a specialist in American constitutional law and history. He is the author of We the Corporations: How American Businesses Won Their Civil Rights (2018) and Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America (2011). His scholarship has been cited in landmark Supreme Court cases and his popular writing has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. He is a frequent commentator about legal issues and has appeared on Face the Nation, CNN, NBC Nightly News, and All Things Considered. He also served as co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Constitution (2d Edition).

Take this class to learn about unemployment insurance, including new legislation passed in response to the COVID-19 crisis, as well as disability insurance, disability leave and sick leave under both new and established law.

Class covers:

  • Unemployment insurance benefits: who is eligible, how much you get, and how long it takes to get it
  • Expanded unemployment benefits for ‘gig’ workers, independent contractors, and others
  • Disability insurance for illness or injury unrelated to your work
  • Paid family leave under California law
  • Paid sick leave for COVID-19 under federal law, and under the City of Los Angeles Supplemental Paid Sick Leave ordinance

Even though the proceedings are simplified, going to small claims court can be intimidating. You have to know certain basic information to win your claim or defend against someone else's. This class provides information you need to go to small claims court with confidence. You will also learn about free resources available to help. Learning important legal fundamentals about small claims court can make your legal journey easier and more successful.

  • Which claims can be filed in small claims court
  • Gathering evidence and deciding who to sue
  • Writing (or responding to) the claim
  • Serving papers
  • Going to court
  • Getting paid if you win
  • Resources for further information and where to seek help
