MCLE: Poetic Justice - Literature and the Law

Wednesday, September 30, 2015
12:15 p.m. — 1:15 p.m.

Is there a difference between law and justice? What is the truth or value of a confession? Can art make us better people, citizens, and practitioners of the law? In this presentation, we will discuss how literary texts address and can help answer these questions. Be introduced to works that either overtly treat the subject of the legal system or address the ethical and moral assumptions that underpin it, and examine the relevance of such works to judges, lawyers and to all of us whose lives are bound up within the juridical system.

Class covers:

  • Modern depictions of legal practice in art and literary works
  • The value of art and literature to practitioners of the law
  • Philosophical questions raised about law and justice in works of art
  • How works of literature address the ethical and moral assumptions underpinning the practice of law
